Radius Brakes How To Basics

To position the material being formed in the brake, mark a line on your material that is mid way through a 90 degree bend (the 45 degree line), then place the material so that you see that line when sighting down the radius head from a bird's eye view. Also known as the shadow line. This will be easier than it probably sounds.

You do not need to clamp the material. Once the apron roller (the part that swings up from below) makes contact with the material being formed, the material will not move on the brake table.

Tubes are used for radii 1" and larger.
Four tubes are included: 2" tube for 1" radius,  2 1/2" tube for 1 1/4" radius, 3" tube for 1 1/2" radius and 4" tube for 2" radius


To change radius head or tube for one of a different size:
If changing to a smaller radius, swap out the radius head first by removing one bolt at each end of the brake that holds the head in place, and install a smaller size radius head. Now use the machine thread adjusting bolts on each end of the brake (there are 4 adjusting bolts, two at each end) to lower the radius head to just above the table, and then raise the apron roller to about 1/4" below the radius head. You can reduce or increase the clearance between the radius head and the apron roller to suit your need. You can also taper one end wider than the other.

If changing to a larger size radius, before removing the radius head, run the two adjuster bolts on each end to their widest separation of the radius head and apron roller. Now replace the radius head with a larger size. Next adjust the radius head down to just above the table, and then bring the apron roller up to about 1/4" below the radius head.

If the radius head you are installing has a tab on one end, place the tab under a block welded to the bed of the brake. This prevents the radius head from rotating while forming material, and it is why you do not need to clamp the material.
